Background. The relevance of the chosen topic allows to go to the issue of intermediality that has a debatable nature in works of Russian and foreign researchers. The aim of the work is to identify the principles of manifestation of intermediality on the basis of a comprehensive philological analysis of a novel by Bernhard Schlink “The woman on the stairs” (2014), particularly the practical aspects of the ecphrasis realization in the poetics of the novel.
Materials and methods. The research tasks were implemented through a review and a critical analysis of the concepts of well-known Russian and foreign researchers. The methodological base of the study was based on the use of literaryhistorical and comparative-typological research methods.
Results. The key to understanding the ideological and artistic content of the work by B. Schlink becomes a portrait of the female character, the grotesque struggle for the possession of which determines the twists and turns of the novel’s characters and the true nature of its conflict.
Conclusions. On the basis of the undertaken study we can draw a conclusion that the entire text of the novel is a detailed complete monologic non-mimetic ecphrasis, which recreates the ethical and aesthetic concept of the author, maintained by B. Schlink in all his works.

Key words

poetics, interpretation, intertext, intermediality, novel form, existential situation, ecphrasis.
